William Addison Dwiggins was the one who termed Graphic Design in 1922. Graphic Designing belongs to Arts, which also includes other forms. Before World War 2, Graphic Designers were known commercial artists. As mentioned in the previous blog, Graphic Designing has its roots attached to history.
Since the beginning, India is known as a varied nation as we have many cultures. It is also known as a colorful nation. In India, from the marvelous caves of Bhimbetka to the eye-capturing Mughal Miniatures, from the Frescoes of Ajanta Caves to the Manuscripts of Kurukshetra war, from the Kerala Mural Paintings to the Rajput Paintings, from the Mysore Paintings to Tanjore Paintings, from the Modern Indian Paintings of late 19th century to the Post Modern Paintings of 21st century you can find Graphic Designing in various forms. The Tribal Arts like Warli, Madhubani, Patachitra, Sohrai, Khovar, Kavad, etc. along with arts like Rangoli, Indian Tribal Tattoos, Mehndi are also included in Graphic Designing category. We can now easily understand that Graphic Designing is not limited to any particular form.
This vast field of Graphic Designing includes designing of Movie Posters Designs, Hand-painted Graphics on Automobiles (Taxis, Trucks, Buses, Autos), Calligraphy, Hand printed works (such as Sarees, Shawls etc.), Typography, Book-Comics covers, Daily Commodities (Match Boxes, Packaging, Wrappers, Boxes, Bottles) etc. You would be surprised if you observe the designs printed on matchboxes. They are filled with mind-blowing patterns and designs. The concepts, vibrant colors, shapes etc. are something hard to find now.
The hand printing of Bandhanis, Block Printed Sarees, Other Fabrics, Shawls etc. are also a part of almost on the verge of getting extinct. Only a few people are there who knows this art which is unmatched. The same goes with Rangoli or Kolam designs. People making them are mostly includes housewives, local artisans, priests of temples etc. Nowadays, sticker rangolis have taken place of traditional rangolis.
These are a few forms of Graphic Designing which are seen in a nation as colorful as India.
